Webinar - Fighting greenwashing: the role of regulations to empower consumers
This webinar focused on combating greenwashing through regulatory frameworks. Hosted by the Consumer Information Programme of the One Planet Network, this session brings together leading experts and authorities in consumer protection, environmental sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
The key objectives of this webinar are to:
- Inform participants about the concept and prevalence of greenwashing in marketing and advertising, highlighting its impact on consumer choices and environmental sustainability.
- Highlight regulatory solutions: coordinate and discuss effective regulatory frameworks aimed at combating greenwashing, emphasizing the importance of clear guidelines and coordination mechanisms.
- Empower action: inspire participants to take informed actions, promoting transparency, and marketing free from misleading environmental claims.
This webinar will formally launch the report on Regulatory Frameworks to Combat Greenwashing developed by UNEP, the Consumer Information Programme of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (One Planet Network), in partnership with International Climate Initiative (IKI) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection of Germany (BMUV). Based on the analysis of 11 legislations on advertising and marketing practices from a sample of countries belonging to different legal systems and different continents (South and North America, Western and Eastern Europe, North and sub-Saharan Africa as well as Asia), this report identifies discussion points on the regulatory framework against greenwashing. It also provides recommendations on how these instruments could be articulated to align with the UNEP Guidelines for providing sustainability information on products.
